President Trump reportedly wants the U.S.-Mexico border wall to get a new paint job — and his reason is simultaneously hilarious and clever.
According to a report from the Washington Post, Trump suggested to advisers back in April the idea of painting the southern border wall with black paint to make it too hot for illegal immigrants to touch in the summer months.
Trump also reportedly said painting the wall with a “black matte” color would also enhance its appearance.
Trump asked several advisers to obtain cost estimates for the paint job. The aesthetic would reportedly cost an additional $500 million.
“POTUS has changed his mind and now wants the fence painted. We are modifying contracts to add,” an unnamed official told the Post.
As noted by the Washington Examiner, this is not the first time Trump has proposed unique ideas for the border wall.
The idea would not be among the first of Trump’s unorthodox proposals to make additions to the southern border wall. In the summer of 2017, the president floated coating the border wall with solar panels to generate environmentally friendly energy, an idea that has not come to fruition.
“There is a chance that we can do a solar wall,” Trump told reporters at the time. “We have major companies looking at that. Look, there’s no better place for solar than the Mexico border — the southern border.”
Trump has promised to build 450 miles of border wall by the end of 2020.
Data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection show crews have completed 175 miles of new border barriers so far. Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott said on Monday that 196 miles of the wall system were under construction while 360 miles of barrier were in pre-construction.

The Trump administration hopes to complete roughly 450 miles of new barrier before the end of 2020.
It’s unclear if such a plan would actually work, but it’s certainly an outside-of-the-box way of thinking.
Democrats are already mad that hundreds of miles of the wall have already been built.
Now, the president wants to paint it black so that in the summer months, it’s too hot illegals to touch.
Last December, Congress voted to approve the National Defense Authorization Act.
The legislation authorizes: (1) $738 billion for defense spending; (2) creates the president’s Space Force, and (3) includes a provision providing all federal workers with 12 weeks paid parental leave.
For perspective, that $738 billion is the highest defense budget since World War II.
The bill also includes a 3.1 percent pay raise for military personnel, $5.3 billion for disaster recovery on military installations, repeals regulations that penalize some Gold Star families collecting benefits from the government, and introduces reforms to private military housing.
House Democrats also dropped a provision to block Trump from transferring money from Pentagon accounts to constructing more of the wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
That’s right: the bill allows Trump to use military funds to build more of the border wall.
While Trump is making America stronger and more prosperous than ever — Democrats are still obstructing him.
